Lewistown Station ~ The Oldest Station built by the PRR

A great piece of PRR history is The Lewistown Station! The Lewistown station holds a special distinction as the oldest surviving structure known to have been built by the Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR). It has served freight shippers or passengers since it opened in 1849. The building is also thought to be the oldest station in continuous use in the United States. Originally constructed as a freight handling warehouse, the Lewistown station was converted to passenger use in 1868. It has drastically changed since then, a tower has been added projecting onto the platform, and reminders of the station's PRR heritage are visible in small details such as lamp posts along the platform that still bear the Keystone emblem.
Today, the facility and the parking lot are owned by the Pennsylvania Railroad Technical and Historical Society, while Norfolk Southern owns the platform and the track. It serves as an Amtrak Station, which is open before and during train departure times. However, the ticket office was closed in 1977.
Another great piece of PRR history or train history in general, is the world famous Rockville Bridge. And, where better to watch trains cross Rockville, than at the Bridgeview Bed & Breakfast!! Located on the banks of the Susquehanna River, Bridgeview B&B is a great location for all train lovers. There are numerous day trips you could take to train watch, or just sit on our deck or indoor sitting room and have trains come to you! We have clean and comfortable rooms, each with private bath, individual A/C, wifi and delicious home cooked breakfasts. Don't wait, visit our website and call 717-957-2438 for rates and reservations!! Check out Trip Advisor for reviews and comments to see why our guests can't wait to return!
