Railfaning Around the Bridgeview ~ Steelton PA

The Steelton plant was started in 1867 by the Pennsylvania Steel Corp with three blast furnaces plus a Bessemer mill, and taken over by Bethlehem Steel in 1917. The blast furnaces were closed in 1960, and steel is produced now by melting scrap in electric arc furnaces. Today Cleveland-Cliffs operates the mill which produces steel bars, rods, ingots and most importantly steel rail. These finished products are shipped out by rail.
The Steelton & Highspire Railroad operates in and around the facility using a variety of older, classic EMD switchers. Scrap is brought in by truck and railcar, unloaded; sorted using large electro-magnets; dumped into the melting cradles and hauled in/out from the furnace by specialized multi axle trucks.
East of the plant is the Durabond pipe mill where steel plate is brought in by rail and formed into large pipe sections which are also shipped out by rail. Several small center cab locomotives serve this facility. Most of these activities can be observed and photographed from public property.
Also Norfolk Southern runs a daily local on the Steelton Industrial Branch, which offers some surprisingly scenic industrial locations for photography.
Steelton PA is just one of many different places to railfan in the Harrisburg area of Central PA when staying at The Bridgeview Bed & Breakfast . At The Bridgeview you can view trains from all 4 sides of our facility, plus be within a short driving distance to some of the best train watching spots Central Pennsylvania has to offer.
