![]() | Operation Lifesaver When many people think of Operation Lifesaver they relate it to railroad grade crossing safety. Operation Lifesaver is more than that, it is also about safety on & around railroad tracks. Unfortunately, in the US, a train hits a vehicle or person every 3 hours. Here is an undisputed fact: The Train always wins!!! A train can be on any track, at any time, and in any direction. Approaching trains can be very quiet, especially when on a downgrade, blind curve or where there is a lot of background noise, and you may not hear them until it is too late. The length, weight and speed of modern day trains has increased dramatically, so it takes up to a mile or more for them to stop. A freight train today can be anywhere from 3,000 to 18,000 tons, which is 6 to 36 million pounds! The average locomotive alone weighs 210-220 tons (465,000 - 480,000 lbs)! Imagine being hit by that much weight at any speed, the result is not going to be pretty. Once again, if you get hit, the train always wins. This Safety message has been brought to you by The Bridgeview Bed & Breakfast where you can stay and watch plenty of trains from a safe distance. ![]() | Little Buffalo State Park ~ Shoaff's Mill Tours Certain places just attract people. The cool, clear water of Little Buffalo Creek has been attracting folks for centuries. American Indians frequented Little Buffalo Creek on hunting trips. Farmers and merchants used to gossip and pass news while the grain was ground at Shoaff’s Mill. Today, thousands of people meet at Little Buffalo State Park to picnic, swim, fish, hike and experience nature and history. Shoaff's Mill is an 1840's era Grist Mill that operates from May to October on weekends from 1-3pm. See a 32 ft steel waterwheel turn just as it has for over 100 years. The Mill was originally built around 1837 by the owners of the Juniata Furnace, and in 1866, after the Furnace closed, the Mill was sold to William Shoaff. The Shoaff family owned and operated the mill for 100 years, grinding corn, wheat, and animal feeds, as well as producing apple cider and black walnut products. Shoaff's Mill was renovated in the 1970s, turning it into a working museum. Little Buffalo State Park and Shoaff's Mill are one of the many places you can visit when lodging in Central Pennsylvania at The Bridgeview Bed & Breakfast.
