FEBRUARY 2ND IS GROUNDHOG DAY!!!

One of the most famous days in PA, Groundhog Day with, Punxsutawney Phil is quite an event. The Groundhog Day celebration is rooted in a Celtic tradition that says that if a hibernating animal casts a shadow on February 2, the Pagan holiday of Imbolc, winter will last another six weeks. If no shadow is seen, legend says, spring will come early. The ties in Pennsylvania may actually come from German tradition, in which clear skies on Candlemas Day, February 2, were said to herald cold weather ahead. In Germany, the tradition evolved into a myth that if the sun came out on Candlemas, a hedgehog would cast its shadow, predicting snow all the way into May. When German immigrants settled in PA, they transferred the tradition onto local fauna, replacing hedgehogs with groundhogs. Today, the town of Punxsutawney celebrates the legendary groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, with a festival. During the ceremony, which begins well before the winter sunrise, Phil emerges with his "wife" Phyllis and "daughter" Phelicia from his temporary home on Gobbler's Knob, located in a rural area south-east of town. According to the tradition, if Phil sees his shadow and returns to his hole, he has predicted six more weeks of winter weather. If Phil does not see his shadow, he has predicted an "early spring". Fort Hunter Maple Sugar Festival ~ 3/1/26

Enjoy a free, late winter event on March 1st, 2026, as the maple sap begins to flow at Fort Hunter's Maple Sugar Festival. Kids and adults can have fun tapping a tree and learning the mysteries of maple sugar making. See maple sap being cooked into syrup, and taste test the real thing by eating real maple syrup on ice cream!! You can even purchase some maple goodies to use at home. It will be a great time for the whole family.

Today is National Hot Chocolate Day!

Each year on January 31, National Hot Chocolate Day warms up people across the country by celebrating the timeless cold-weather beverage.
In America, we often use the terms hot chocolate and hot cocoa interchangeably. However, the two beverages are different.
Cocoa vs Hot Chocolate
We make hot cocoa with cocoa powder, heated milk or water, and sugar.
We make hot chocolate, the thicker, more flavorful beverage from ground chocolate containing cocoa butter. Hot chocolate has also been around longer than hot cocoa.. This thicker, creamier beverage offers medicinal benefits for stomach ailments, and there are other health benefits to drinking hot chocolate. A Slice of History ~ Subway Cafe, Harrisburg PA

When visiting Central PA, it's a must to try a slice of history at Subway Cafe . Locals love their hand-thrown pizza, featuring a famous super-skinny crust, fresh toppings, plenty of cheese and topped (Yes, Topped!) with a layer of homemade sauce. It is not your typical pizza pie!!! While eating their pizza, get a 32 ounce fishbowl of beer to wash it down!! Unique is an understatement for the Subway Cafe!!
Donato, Sr. and Liana Giusti opened the Subway Cafe in July of 1948. Now, thousands have stopped at the two-story brick building with its tall neon sign for the old-world pizzas. The couple took over the restaurant at 1000 Herr St. and unknowingly built a landmark! 78 years later and it's still going strong!!!!
