![]() | Boyd Big Tree Preserve Hiking Trails One of the many exciting things to do in Central Pennsylvania is to visit one of our 120 State Parks. Boyd Big Tree Preserve Conservation Area has 1025 acres with over 12 miles of hiking trails allowing you to enjoy all the natural beauty of autumn! The field on top of the ridge can be a great place to watch the annual hawk migration as these magnificent birds of prey ride the Blue Mountain thermals. The Boyd Big Tree Trails are: 1. Pond Loop Trail - 1.2 miles, pink blazes, easy hiking, skirts the spring-fed pond, a popular watering hole for wildlife. 2. Lower Spring Trail - 1.1 miles, lavender blazes, easy hiking, great for cross-country skiing and to see the heart of the conservation area. 3. East Loop Trail - 1.9 miles, lime green blazes, moderate hiking, toward the eastern end of the conservation area 4. Creek Trail - 0.9 mile, medium blue blazes, moderate hiking, along the creek near an American beech grove, then angles up near the park 's western edge. 5. Janie Trail - 2.8 miles, red blazes, difficult hiking, follows the ridge top and comes down on a steep slope. A red-blazed spur leads to a parking lot on the Blue Mountain Parkway. 6. Upper Spring Trail - 2 miles, beige blazes, moderate hiking, a nice cross-sectional view of large second growth oaks, hickories and beeches which are sure to make for beautiful fall leaves. 7. Coach Trail - 0.9 mile, yellow blazes, easy hiking, follows the ridge base and loops at the park's western edge, good for cross-country skiing plus an overview of the park 's natural beauty.
