![]() | Lewistown Station ~ The Oldest Station built by the PRR A great piece of Pennsylvania Railroad history is The Lewistown Station! The Lewistown station holds a special distinction as the oldest surviving structure known to have been built by the Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR). It has served freight shippers or passengers since it opened in 1849. The building is also thought to be the oldest station in continuous use in the United States. Originally constructed as a freight handling warehouse, the Lewistown station was converted to passenger use in 1868. It has drastically changed since then, a tower has been added projecting onto the platform, and reminders of the station's PRR heritage are visible in small details such as lamp posts along the platform that still bear the Keystone emblem. Today, the facility and the parking lot are owned by the Pennsylvania Railroad Technical and Historical Society, while Norfolk Southern owns the platform and the track. It serves as an Amtrak Station, which is open before and during train departure times. However, the ticket office was closed in 1977. Another great piece of PRR history or train history in general, is the world famous Rockville Bridge. And, where better to watch trains cross Rockville, than at the Bridgeview Bed & Breakfast!! Located on the banks of the Susquehanna River, Bridgeview B&B is a great location for all train lovers. ![]() | 2025 Year In Review The year 2025 really brought about some really terrific railroad related happenings! Here are a few: The East Broad Top Railroad now has an operating steam locomotive for excursions, and continues the amazing revival, with clearing and trackwork heading south on the march to Saltillo! The Saltillo Station is being rebuilt, and grant money has been obtained for repairing the two bridges on this section of the line as well. Reading & Northern carries on expansion of their passenger train excursions, including steam locomotive 2102 doing some great rambles on R&N trackage. Norfolk Southern added two more locomotives to their awesome Heritage fleet, while repainting others. C&O Locomotive 614 was moved to the Strasburg Railroad shops for a complete restoration and eventual return to service! The Harrisburg, PA area remains a busy rail hub and a "Hot Spot" for train watching!! Here at The Bridgeview Bed & Breakfast we would like to express our sincere gratitude to all of the folks who came out and stayed with us in 2025, during our 18 years in business!! The Bridgeview could not have survived all these years without your support, and, we look forward to seeing you all in the future!!
